Up to 90% of dementia patients exhibit one or more behavior problems. These problems fatigue home caregivers and create burdens which cause caregiver illness and premature patient placement in long term care. Once institutionalized these same behaviors drive up the costs of care and drive down the quality of resident & staff life. JAMA reported recently the most common treatment for these symptoms is pharmacological despite documented high cost, low efficacy and increased morbidity.
